The driver airbag is a vehicle safety device consisting of an occupant restraint with a flexible designed envelope which can inflate during collision. The inflation of the airbag during collision prevents the vehicle occupants from striking objects within the colliding vehicle and can also prevent the driver from being flown from the vehicle or the vehicle‘s windshield. The safety device is considered to be passive opposed to active in most modern vehicles today because there is no action required by the vehicle occupant to activate the air bag. The design of airbags are so that they will deploy in frontal and near-frontal collisions which are more rigorous than a threshold set forth by regulations which control vehicle construction. A United States study concluded that as many as six thousand lives have been saved by an airbag.
