Modern fuel-injected cars are renowned for their smooth running, quick starting, and great fuel economy. What makes this possible is the use of a computer to regulate the running of the engine. In order to produce the best economy, the fuel needs to be doled out in precise proportion to the amount of air being sucked into the engine. This is best accomplished by measuring the air as it goes into the engine, then injecting fuel at a 14.7 to 1 ratio. The air flow meter is designed to determine the mass of the air entering the intake tract and send that data to the computer, which then tells the injectors to squirt the proper amount of fuel. These meters have been developed to be durable and also inexpensive to build, but they still need to be replaced from time to time. Rebuilt meters are available at very attractive prices.
