Anti lock brakes are the most important safety innovation of all time. When the brakes are applied hard, as in a "panic stop," one of the wheels will usually have slightly worse grip on the road than the others. As the pressure on the brakes increases that wheel will stop turning. A wheel that is no longer turning cannot help the car slow down, nor can it help steer the car. With anti lock brakes, this cannot happen, and the driver has control over the car throughout the braking process. In order to make this happen, an anti lock brake computer gathers data from speed sensors at each wheel, then, by operating a series of valves and pumps, assures that maximum braking effort is being supplied by each wheel without any of those wheels to locking up or skidding. This computer is a very important piece of safety equipment.
