A B C D E F G H I K L M O P Q R S T V W Find your Axle Assembly Front now!In a front wheel drive car, the power is conducted to the wheels by an axle assembly. Because the end of the axle attached to the wheel must swivel as the wheel is turned to steer the car, and because it must also accommodate the movement of the suspension, the outer end of the axle is fitted with a "constant velocity" joint. This assures that the turning of the axle does not upset the ride or handling of the car. The inner joint of the axle must also flex up and down, but less so. This is good, because the inner end of the axle is also given the job of moving in and out as the distance between the wheel and the transaxle changes with suspension movement. The joints are covered with rubber boots to prevent dirt from contaminating their lubricant. Axles are generally replaced rather than being repaired.
